Bullet M2 Drone Detector

Bullet M2 Drone Detector

Solo Build
Software 3D Printing

A Commercial Off-the-Shelf(COTS) drone detector for Airspace Defense Inc. using a Ubiquiti Bullet M2.

About the project

For this project, I worked alongside Airspace Defense, a Bay Area company. I made a portable, low-cost, and easily replicable drone detector that identifies drones flying on 2.4 GHz with a Ubiquiti Bullet M2, and then processes and sends the drone’s location over to the Airspace Galaxy web app.

Using a 3D-printed case, each system cost around $200 each and had a proposed range of 4 kilometers, although this range was restricted in the city. I ran OpenWRT on the Bullet M2 and Tcpdump, and used Wireshark to process the OpenDroneID packets. Before this internship, I had little experience with radio and UAS systems, but this project helped me further understand drones before I built one.
